Virtual private server, translated as Virtual Private Server, is virtualized hardware sold as a service by an Internet hosting service. The virtual private server runs its own copy of the operating system (OS), and customers can access this OS instance at the superuser level, so they can install almost any software that runs on this OS. A virtual server costs much less than an equivalent physical server. However, because the virtual servers share the underlying physical hardware with other VPSs, performance may be lower depending on the workload of any other startup virtual machines.
